How to look after your watch: steel, leather, silicone and nylon

Simple ways to keep a quartz watch looking good and working well: cleaning each strap type, protecting the glass and handling the battery.

Quartz watches need very little maintenance, but a few habits keep them looking new for years. Here is what to do for each part of the watch.

Stainless-steel case and bracelet

Wipe with a soft cloth. For dirt between the links, use a soft toothbrush with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap, then rinse and dry — only if the watch is water resistant. Never use bleach or solvents.

Leather straps

Keep leather dry and away from perfume and creams. If it gets wet, let it dry naturally, away from heat. Wipe it with a dry cloth. Leather darkens and softens with use; that is normal.

Silicone and resin straps

These are the easiest to clean: wash with soap and water, rinse and dry. A little talc helps if a silicone strap feels sticky after a hot day.

Nylon straps

Remove the strap if you can, hand wash it in soapy water, rinse and let it dry flat.

The glass

Most SKMEI watches use hardened mineral glass. It resists everyday knocks, but it can be scratched by keys, walls and stone surfaces. Take the watch off for DIY, gym weights and gardening.

The battery

A quartz battery usually lasts a couple of years, depending on how often you use the light and the alarm. When the watch starts losing time or the display fades, replace the battery soon — an old battery can leak. After a battery change, the seals should be checked before swimming with the watch.

Storage

Store the watch in a dry place away from direct sun and heat. If you will not wear it for months, a watch shop can remove the battery for you.

Something stopped working? Every watch has a 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects. See Returns & Refunds for how to make a claim.
