Watch water resistance explained: what 3 Bar and 5 Bar really mean

What 3 Bar / 30 m and 5 Bar / 50 m really mean in daily life — rain, hand washing, swimming — and how to keep a watch water resistant.

Most SKMEI watches are rated either 3 Bar (30 m) or 5 Bar (50 m). The numbers sound like diving depths, but they are not. They describe the pressure the case resisted in a static test, in a lab. Real life adds movement, temperature changes and soap, so the practical limits are lower than the numbers suggest.

3 Bar / 30 m: splash resistant

A 3 Bar watch is fine with rain, sweat, splashes and washing your hands. It is not made for swimming, showering or bathing. Most analog quartz models, such as the SKMEI 2256 and the SKMEI 9156, are in this group.

5 Bar / 50 m: swimming in a pool

A 5 Bar watch can go into a pool for normal surface swimming. It is still not a diving watch, and it should not be used for high-speed water sports or diving from a board. Sport models such as the SKMEI 2471, the SKMEI 2396 and the SKMEI 2056 are rated 5 Bar.

What to avoid with any water-resistant watch

  • Pressing buttons underwater. It can let water past the seals. Use the stopwatch before you get in.
  • Hot water, saunas and steam. Heat makes the seals expand and contract.
  • Soap, shampoo and sea salt. Rinse the watch in fresh water after the sea or the pool and dry it.
  • Leather straps in water. Even if the case is fine, leather swells and cracks when it gets wet.

Seals do not last forever

The rubber gaskets that keep water out age with time. If the watch has been opened, for example to change the battery, the seals should be checked before you take it swimming again. If you ever see moisture under the glass, stop using the watch and contact us — within the 2-year warranty we repair or replace manufacturing defects.

Which rating do you need?

  • Office, city, rain, washing up: 3 Bar is enough.
  • Swimming, beach, pool, kayaking: choose 5 Bar.

Every product page lists the rating under Specifications. See all sport watches or the tougher outdoor watches.
